One for sorrow
lonely berthing
tree gone fallow
yearning for…
all asunder
wooden quarry
all of flame-fraught
fire-wrought moor.
Thirsty crow, smoky-wing
riddle you this, riddle and sing
an empty vase and a fire-dry nest
where to drink, where to rest?
Crafty crows in an endwise roost
drop their stones on the weeping spruce
weeping spruce, ash and green
longs for stones to raze its grief
The charlatan wind holds its breath
an idling sky whispers death
the smog and the smoke
the crows will all choke
the fledglings croak
of a charlatan wind
and an idling sky that whispers death
of smog and of smoke
of crows that all choke
the fledglings croak.
One for sorrow…
Thirsty crow, smoky-wing
riddle you this, riddle and sing
a windless sky and a char-gagged home
where to fly, where to roam?
Weary crows on a city-wise path
weld their nests with shit and slag
weeping lines, electric green
grease the air with fictile dreams
The charlatan wind holds its breath
an idling sky whispers death
the smog and the smoke
the crows will all choke
the fledglings croak.
the charlatan wind holds its breath
an idling sky whispers death
of smog and of smoke
the crows will all choke
the fledglings croak.
The crows stopper breath to cheat death
a riddling sky whispers myth
the spark and the liar
the birds made of wire
the crows withhold death to cheat
a riddling sky whispers myth
the engineered earth
the phoenix in birth
the charlatan crow holds its breath
and idling time withdraws death
Carbon eggs and ice
avian machine
wings of glass and sheen
beak-made trickster gleans
One for sorrow
two for mirth
three for the harrowing
four for birth
five for silver
six for gold
seven for secrets
that must be told
eight for endings
nine for hel
ten for murder
ten the bells
ten times knelling
ten the spell
ten too many
ten to quell.

Kindling from the valley
flame falling like snow bewitched
Dog Days rust and bonefire grit
the setting sun bleeds through the sky.
Hunger preying like Bluebeard
smoking, choking the chamber awaits.
Pay heed to the need of moths:
know their flight: fire and flee.
Salt and wood and ash and tree
Salt for sea and wood for burning
ash for fire and hex for tree
Shifting scales
salt and ash
heaping high
in my palms.
I speak the language of fog
the skies speak in smoke.
Westward the pull of my bones
my marrow-map home.
Night calls the bleeding sun down
the fire stays bright.
Embers, like river stones burn
the lake high again.
Skies are red.

Seaward

Transience, my dreams have all been ravenous
wandering, forlorn for the sound of the shore.
Riparian child with rustfall from her eyes
dreamweave face lost to the bloom of salt.
I am always returning
the tides are always pulling
I am always listening
the gulls are always calling
Reverie shoulders
a red wound
drawn to the fire
severing her self
she walks into the sea.
The wolf-womb is in-between.
Hungering.
Hungering.

The Sentinel

Once, he was bloodless
too young to sit still
no blood to bind him
no oath to shape his will
Once, he was restless
limping from the sand
seeking a new shore
a new place to stand.
Once, he was homeless
no bones stacked by the hearth
no ghosts on the heath
just the road beneath his feet.
He was fire, he was dirt
he was nameless, no keeper
he was all of nothing, so he kept on walking.
The mountain named him, the storm claimed him
anchor, landfall, our watcher.
Heavy his blood
with the taste of sky
with the smell of pine
with the weight of snow and time.
Restful his watch
sleepless he stands
far from the shore
the never-waning brand.
Once, he was homeless...
The sentinel stands with his feet in the tides
riding against the moon’s embrace
Like a red-jawed Thor
braced ‘gainst the earth
the storm-snake wrapped ‘round his girth.
Now, the storm tide
cloud spills down the mountainside
the sentinel stands still
for the earth to pull him near.
Once he was roving and lost.
Nameless, wandered, a bloodless vagabond.
